Advertising with Religion-specific Newspapers is a Prime Way to Target an Important Market Segment

Catholic newspapers are the largest group of religious newspapers, with nearly four million circulation weekly. An integral part of the local Catholic community, these newspapers deliver local editorial content, news from local organizations, special events, birth announcements, obituaries and church bulletins. Other newspapers, such as the Los Angeles Tidings and Miami Jewish Journal, also focus on reaching individuals of specific religious denominations, and include news specifically geared towards the needs and concerns of their respective communities.

The editorial to advertising ratio in many religious newspapers is quite high, thus, providing advertisers with a great advantage in reaching various religious communities. An additional benefit to advertisers is that most religious newspapers do not carry any co-operative FSIs, therefore, reducing clutter even more, and providing advertisers with a greater opportunity to place any packaged goods coupons, retail circulars, mail-order offers and others. A survey conducted by Mediamarket Research states that approximately 53% of Christians in the United States use coupons for their shopping needs. Additionally, more than twice the number of respondents state they use coupons collected from newspaper inserts over coupons obtained through the mail. Grocery stores are often the store of choice when redeeming coupons rather than drug or discount merchants. Another interesting statistic is that close to 70% of Christians almost always use a shopping list.
